Lake View Presbyterian Church Staff
Joy Douglas Strome, Pastor Larissa Kwong Abazia, Associate Pastor Sue Cox, Parish Nurse John
Erickson,
Pianist
Joy attended McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and received her Masters in Divinity in 1991. She served the Community Presbyterian Church of Mt. Prospect for five years prior to coming to Lake View in 1996. Joy has received extensive training in church redevelopment and under her leadership, the church has seen substantial growth-both in membership and programs of the church. Joy is committed to the belief that the church should be a resource for the community where all people can come to nurture spiritual life through education, service opportunities and worship. Program development and the creative use of media, music and drama in worship are areas where Joy has made an impact on the life of Lake View Church. The December
20, 2004 issue of CRAIN'S
CHICAGO BUSINESS named Joy as one of the 5 "preachers to
seek out" in Chicago.
LLarissa was born and raised in northern New Jersey. She attended Rutgers University and graduated with Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in History. She attended Princeton Theological Seminary where she earned her Master of Divinity degree in 2007. Larissa worked for eight weeks at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, then accepted a position as a pastoral care resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which she completed in May 2008. Larissa is deeply passionate about issues of racism, diversity and the call to live in community. She was involved in advocacy for racial/ethnic students while in seminary and worked with various campus committees to evoke change. She currently serves on the Core Leadership of Racial Ethnic Young Women Together, a ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and will complete her term in the spring of 2009. Larissa is excited to be a part of the story of Lake View Presbyterian Church. She looks forward to working in partnership with others to examine our past, live in the present, and vision for the future.
In partnership with Advocate Health Care we are fortunate to have in our midst Sue Cox, a registered nurse who has been trained specifically to work in a parish setting. Whether it is visiting someone in the hospital or helping a new mom get settled with an infant, whether she is monitoring blood pressures or teaching a health education class Sues work among us reflects our commitment to spiritual, mental and physical well-being for all our members.
