Lake View Presbyterian Church Social Justice Committee
“. . . to do
justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
- Micah 6:8 Who We Are: Seven years ago, Lake View Presbyterian Church (LVPC) formed a Social Justice Committee to organize and oversee the many diverse interests that members are passionate about when it comes to social justice. Social Justice concerns have long been a hallmark of LVPC. Recent growth in numbers and issues to be addressed called for a more organized approach. Their task was to enable and empower church members as they work to act on their faith in the world. The Social Justice Committee gets involved when a church member chooses to champion a cause and wants to work to form a group to educate and activate our community. We welcome members of the church community to our meetings to talk to us about issues that are important to them. Mission Statement: As
an inclusive and progressive Presbyterian (PCUSA) community, we are called to
feed the spiritual and physical hungers of all God’s children. Core Values:
Chairperson
: Jeff Glenn and Renee Grogg (Fair Trade Bazaars) Mission:
to create a world where every person gets paid a living wage for the
work they do, the goods they produce and the services they provide. Goals/Objectives:
We work to educate people at LVPC and throughout Chicagoland about
fair trade practices and make available merchandise for sale. The
main activities of the Fair Trade Task Force include the weekly sale of Fair
Trade coffee, chocolate and tea after 11:00 services and the LVPC Fair Trade
Bazaars which happen once or twice a year. Visit the following sites for more information about Fair Trade opportunities:
Mission:
to provide Fellowship,
Nurturing, Education, Outreach, and Advocacy for and from the LGBT community of
our church. Goals/Objectives:
We seek to provide a complete religious experience for the
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trangendered person by ensuring that their church
is a place where they may experience and in which they may provide to the
greater community love, healing, knowledge, understanding, and help. Out
and About is mindful of the LGBT community's particular need to be
accepted as valid members of the world community--that awareness reminds us
that it is our duty and our joy to embrace our straight brothers and
sisters in the same love we seek from them. The focus of our work is
making the Lakeview Presbyterian family richer and whole by
bringing all of its members together. All events and activities are
open and anyone who wishes to attend is warmly welcome! Out and About meets the first Thursday of each month for a discussion group that tackles topics that daily touch the lives of our LGBT sisters and brothers. We meet the third Thursday of each month for a potluck--come with a dish; leave with a smile. Other activities and projects throughout the year include many Pride Month events in June, representing LVPC in a booth at Halsted Market Days, and planning church services for such red letter days as Pride Weekend, National Coming Out Day, and World AIDS Day. Out and About is also dedicated to maintaining and furthering the good work of Cafe Pride--an outreach to LGBT youth that provides a welcoming and safe place from the streets of Chicago on Friday nights.
