Prelude Sonata in E Michael Christian Festing (1680-1752)

Call to Worship Floyd May, Chair-Worship Committee

O World, come together in one place,
And suddenly an almighty roar shall sound:

The rush of a mighty wind,
A tempest from the mountaintop!

O World, kneel together in one place,
And suddenly a fiery pillar shall rise:

The tongue of a fiery spirit,
A flash from heaven’s crown!

O World, come and kneel together:
And the place shall be sacred: the moment, divine!

Let us worship God with singing, with music, with thanksgiving and praise!

Organ Solo Toccata and Fugue in d minor Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

A Dedication Litany adapted from Psalm 150

For the gift of music and song
We praise you, O God, in your sanctuary

For notes and rhythm and varieties of expression.
We praise you, O God, in your mighty firmament!
For our ancestors in the faith, who invested in music for future generations
We praise you, O God, for your mighty deeds!

For all those who have offered their musical gifts in this space,
We praise you, O God, with trumpet sounds!

For the inspiration and joy that music brings to our worship
We praise you, O God, with tambourine and dance!

For those who with great artistry and expertise, brought our organ back to life
We praise you, O God, with strings and pipes!

For those who invested in repairs and renovation,
We praise you, O God, with clanging cymbals,
with loud clashing cymbals!

For the music that will be produced through these pipes and keyboard
for many generations to come,
We praise you, O God.
With every breath that we take,
With every song that we sing,
With all that we are,
We praise you, O God. Amen.

A Prayer of Dedication

Eternal God, our praises join with the songs of heavenly choirs and the music of the universe. May this organ encourage our praise and lift our singing. May the music it produces bring our prayers to you in times of joy and times of sorrow. Trusting in Jesus Christ, we dedicate this organ in your name, O God, now and always. Amen.

John Bryant holds his degree in Church Music/Organ from Northwestern University where he studied organ with Grigg Fountain and piano with Lawrence Davis. He is Organist/Music Director of the St. Gall Church, Chicago and works with Bradford Organ Company, Evanston. John was one of the crew that rebuilt the Lake View organ. He lives in Rogers Park with his partner and two cats.

Lake View Presbyterian Church welcomes you to our long awaited dedication service of our pipe organ. The Lyon and Healy company of Chicago installed the three manual 23 stop tubular-pneumatic organ in 1898. In 1950 Nicholas Doerr, a local organ serviceman, electrified the organ and installed a supply-house console. The original chests, pipework and winding system remain intact. The original tubular-pneumatic action had side-wall pouches that exhausted to allow air to the pipes; now, the electric action exhausts these pneumatics through a series of primaries and secondaries. The façade pipes were painted over multiple times in succeeding years.

By the 1980s the organ had become largely unplayable. Between 1999 and 2002, considerable restoration and repair was carried out by the Bradford Organ Company of Evanston, Illinois. The 1950s-era console was replaced with another recycled console, thoroughly rebuilt with solid-state combination action. The façade pipes were stripped and cleaned. Area artist William Wheeler replicated the original design on the pipes.

Our thanks go to Walter Bradford and his crew for the hundreds of hours of work needed to restore our beautiful instrument. The entire Bradford crew includes:
